My campaign has gotten off to a great start, and it’s been a non-stop calendar of events!

Annie's ListIn April I attended the Annie’s list lunch to support all the women who were elected to office in our great state of Texas. These empowered women are busy making their mark and impacting our government on both a local and national level.

While there, I had the opportunity to meet Kamala Harris, current Attorney General of California and one of most impressive female attorneys I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.

For Mother’s Day Weekend my mother and mother-in-law joined me at the ROADWomen Heart of the City brunch. It was a fantastic event and great way to celebrate the day, by honoring women who lead businesses and non-profits in Houston, the honorees included Anne Sung for her work on Community Voices in Public Education and Monica Pope of Sparrow Bar +Cookshop. Houston First Lady Kathy Hubbard was the honorary event chair.

In late May I attended the Harris County Democrats Living legends Brunch. It was a dynamic and inspiring event. The honorees were introduced by a newer member of the Democratic Party after interviewing them specifically for the event.

BennettAnother highlight from May included seeing the Honorable Alfred H. Bennett being sworn in as a federal court judge for the Southern District of Texas. The Senate approved his appointment in a 95-0 vote. After he was elected to the bench in 2008, had the honor of practicing before Judge Bennett. Later I was fortunate enough to get to work with him as his Tax Master. He is an outstanding judge and is a great addition to the federal bench.

EventJune saw my first fundraiser at Surroundings in West University. The turnout was fantastic, and I was truly honored by all the support. If you would like to support my campaign financially go to www.kristenhawkinsforjudge.com.

June also marked two historic United States Supreme Court rulings. The first one on the Affordable Care Act directly impacts my clients. As an attorney who represents people with serious health conditions, I know first-hand the difference having access to affordable health insurance makes in their lives.

The second momentous ruling marked the legalization of marriage for same-sex couples, which incidentally coincided with the celebration of Gay Pride. I was proud that some of our Harris County judges waived the waiting period and married same-sex couples on the same day as the ruling.

FamilyOn a personal note, the kids are enjoying their time off from school and spending as much time as they can at the pool. I was lucky enough to get away for a quick trip to Dallas to visit my father. My dad and I spent the afternoon enjoying Fort Worth’s fantastic museums where we stumbled across Michelangelo’s first painting at the Kimball. We moved from art to barbeque at Angelo’s before rocking out at the Rolling Stones concert. A quick but fun getaway.

Over the Fourth of July we took a family trip to the hill country where we cheered on Wimberley’s Fourth of July parade, shopped Wimberley market day, tubed the Comal, and wore ourselves out at Schlitterbahn. Hope your Fourth of July was just as fun!
